The first Lap Desks were made by Kathleen's dear ex- husband Robert Meier and her in the ‘80’s. They were functional but very heavy because they were made with thick cutting boards. They made 10 of them and gave them to friends.

history2 history1

In the early '90's, Kathleen created TomKat Enterprises and made Lap Desks as a hobby along with jewelry and wood carriers. She explored different types of wood and decided to use lighter weight birch laminate. She sold the Lap Desks at Eugene’s Saturday Market for three years and then stopped to focus more intensely on her other business, Pediatric Physical Therapy  Services. This private practice served children with neurological problems and was open for twelve years.

In 1998,  Kathleen decided to close her practice and accept a position in the Caribbean at Ross University School of Medicine, a medical school that had just opened a physical therapy division. She helped to write the curriculum and taught a small group of P.T. students. Unfortunately, the P.T. school closed due to a lack of qualified applicants. The medical school continues to this day.

In 2001, Kathleen returned to the U.S. The next year she was diagnosed and treated for cancer and spent a lot of time sitting by the window in her apartment using her old Lap Desk (one made with a cutting board)  for dining, reading, and journaling.

For the next three years, Kathleen dealt with cancer and a number of other physical maladies including a painful neck condition. Her Lap Desk served her well throughout her recovery, but it was very heavy to lift with one hand as she sat in her chair. She decided to make a lighter weight version.

Lap of Luxury is Born

In 2005, Kathleen created Lap of Luxury Lap Desks to assist others in the relief of eye, neck, shoulder and back strain, and to provide a practical aide in working and playing away from a table or desk.

Today, we use lightweight maple, cherry or walnut laminate or solid bamboo to construct the desks. We switched to shredded foam filler and discontinued the use of polyfil. The shredded foam regains its shape if prodded and is also very light.

Lap of Luxury Lap Desks brings the beauty, fun and support of custom made Lap Desks to the world. We carry two sizes of cushioned lap desks and take custom orders for other sizes.

We look forward to assisting you with any issue related to the relief of pain or the use of our high quality Lap Desks. See our article on vision problems to understand why children with reading and writing difficulties may benefit from using a Lap Desk.

Thank you for your interest and we hope that you enjoy writing, reading, playing games, using your laptop computer, your tablet, or even paying your bills using your new Lap of Luxury Lap Desk!
