I created Lap of Luxury, a completely hand made lap tray, in 2005 from an older company of mine, TomKat Enterprises, that made Lap Desks in the early '90's. I was working as a physical therapist (P.T.) at the time, very aware of the causes of eye, neck, shoulder and back strain, and wanted to create something that would reduce this strain.

The first Lap Desks that I made were functional but very heavy secondary to the thick cutting boards that I used. I explored different types of wood and decided to use lighter weight birch plywood. I sold my Lap Desks at Eugene's Saturday Market for three years and then stopped to focus on my private practice in physical therapy treating children. After closing my practice I went to work in the Caribbean at Ross University School of Medicine, a medical school that started a physical therapy school in 1998. I helped to write the curriculum and to teach a small group of P.T. students. Unfortunately, the P.T. school soon closed due to a lack of qualified applicants. The medical school continues.

In 2001, I returned to the U.S. The next year I was diagnosed and treated for cancer and spent a lot of time sitting by the window in my apartment. I got out my old Lap Desk (one made with the cutting board) and used it constantly for dining, reading, and journaling.

For the next three years, I dealt with cancer and a number of other physical maladies including a painful neck condition. My Lap Desk served me well throughout my recovery but was very heavy to lift with one hand as I sat in my chair.

I continue to appreciate the support that my old Lap Desk provides to my arms and neck but most of the time I use a new lighter weight model

I have created Lap of Luxury Lap Desks to bring the beauty, fun and support of my Lap Desks to the world. I currently carry two sizes of lap desks, small and large, and take custom orders for other sizes. I look forward to assisting you with any issue related to the relief of pain or the use of my high quality Lap Desks. See my article on vision problems to understand why kids with reading and writing difficulties may benefit from using a Lap Desk.

Thank you for your interest and I hope that you enjoy writing, reading, playing games, using your laptop computer, and even paying your bills on your new Lap of Luxury Lap Desk!
