The first Lap Desks were made by my husband and me
in the ‘80’s. They were functional but very heavy because we
used thick cutting boards. We made ten of them and gave them to
our friends.
In the early '90's, I created TomKat Enterprises and made Lap Desks as
a hobby along with jewelry and wood carriers. I explored different
types of wood and decided to use lighter weight
birch laminate. I sold my Lap
Desks at Eugene’s Saturday Market for
three years and
then stopped to focus more intensely on my other business, Pediatric
Physical Therapy
(P.T.) Services. In this private practice I treated children with
neurological problems
for twelve years.
In 1998, I decided to close my practice and accept a position in the
Caribbean at Ross University School of Medicine, a medical school that
had just opened a physical therapy school. I helped to write the
curriculum and to teach a small group of P.T. students. Unfortunately,
the P.T. school closed due to a lack of qualified applicants. The
medical school continues.
In 2001, I returned to the U.S. The next year I
was diagnosed and treated for cancer and spent a lot of time sitting by
the window in my apartment. I got out my old Lap Desk (one made
with
the cutting board) and used it constantly for dining, reading, and
journaling.
For the next three years, I dealt with cancer and
a number
of other physical maladies including a painful neck condition. My Lap
Desk served me well throughout my recovery but was very
heavy to lift
with one hand as I sat in my chair. I decided to make a lighter weight
lap desk.
In 2005 I created Lap of
Luxury Lap Desks to
assist others in relief of eye, neck, shoulder and back strain, and to
provide a practical aide in working and playing away from a table or
desk.
I use lightweight birch, maple or cherry plywood
to construct the desks. Lovely yet lighter and treated with lacquer,
the laminate is easy to keep clean as well as easy to lift. I switched
to shredded foam filler and discontinued the use of polyfil. The
shredded foam regains its shape if prodded and is also very light.
In summary, I have created Lap of Luxury Lap Desks
to bring the beauty, fun and support of my Lap Desks to the
world. I currently carry two sizes of cushioned lap desks and take custom
orders for other sizes and for lounge chair lap desks (no
pillow).
I look forward to assisting you with any issue related to the relief
of pain or the use of my high quality Lap Desks. See my article on vision problems
to understand why children with reading and writing difficulties may
benefit from using a Lap Desk.
Thank you for your interest and I hope that you
enjoy writing, reading, playing games, using your laptop computer, and
even paying your bills with the support of your new Lap of Luxury Lap Desk!
